GRAND ISLAND, Neb.— A piece of South Locust Street in Grand Island will be opening on Monday for winter, ahead of the 2026 construction phase.

The City of Grand Island Public Works Department announced the opening from Fonner Park Road to Anna Street/Bismark Road on Friday.

It will be open to all lanes of traffic beginning December 15.

The over $9 million project includes full reconstruction from Fonner Park Road to Koenig Street with the replacement of asphalt roadways, concrete curbs, sidewalks, bike trails, lighting, and sewer improvements. There will also be a roundabout addition at the intersection of South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road.

The section from Fonner Park Road to Delaware Avenue has been completed.

Clean-up activities will continue within the project corridor over the next several weeks, but the roadway will remain open to traffic throughout the winter months.

The roadway construction project will resume in the spring of 2026 as it is planned over two construction seasons in 2025 and 2026.
