Cheyenne police investigate in-custody death following DUI call
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Police Department is investigating an in-custody death that occurred early Sunday morning following a response to a report of a suspicious vehicle.
According to police, officers were dispatched around 1:17 a.m. Sunday to the area of West 9th Street and Deming Drive, where a maroon pickup truck was found parked on a sidewalk after apparently striking a guardrail and coming to rest in a grassy area off the roadway.
After reviewing body-worn and in-car camera footage, police said officers searched the surrounding area for the driver and observed a man running along Deming Drive. Officers made contact with the man and determined he was the owner of the vehicle.
Police said the man showed signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming alcohol. He was detained, and officers removed a pocketknife from his front pocket prior to handcuffing him. He was then placed in a police vehicle and transported back to the crash scene while officers prepared to begin a DUI investigation.
While secured in the patrol vehicle, officers briefly stepped away to assess the crash scene. Police said the man was able to move his handcuffed hands from behind his body to the front, retrieve a concealed firearm from inside his pants, and fatally shoot himself.
Officers immediately began administering first aid until medical personnel arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a tremendous loss for the decedent’s family and loved ones,” Cheyenne Police Chief Mark Francisco said in a statement. He added that the department is thoroughly reviewing the incident and will take appropriate steps based on the findings.
