Eagles notes: Chadron State wrestling defeats Pueblo on Friday

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State tallied four technical falls, Caleb Chaves earned a ranked win and CSC came within one win of a clean sweep in a dominant 39-3 dual victory over CSU Pueblo on Friday night in the Chicoine Center.
The Eagles improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC ahead of a clash with fellow RMAC unbeaten Adams State next Saturday, January 31. CSU Pueblo fell to 4-4 and 0-2 in the RMAC.
Chadron State received bonus points from six wrestlers in Friday's win. Quade Smith earned a pin to start the match at 125 pounds, Aidan Callahan (149 pounds), Brandon Paredes (157), Keegan Gehlhausen (184) and Mason Villwok (197 pounds) all scored five points each with tech-fall wins while Tayten Gillette earned a four-point major decision.
Also victorious during Friday's dual were Hunter Jacobsen (133 pounds), Caleb Chaves (141) and Eli Reese (285).
The night's highest-profile showdown featured Pueblo's Eddie Bowman (ranked No. 13 by NWCA, No. 14 by Open Mat) against Caleb Chaves (ranked No. 14/17), who was in the top 10 before his loss in last week's dual to New Mexico Highlands while Chaves struggled to get through the match due to injury.
It was a bounce back performance and then some for Chaves. After the two felt each other out for much of the match, Chaves went airborne to wrangle down Bowman for the bout's only takedown with just under 20 seconds left to seal a 4-2 win.
At the stage, CSC led comfortably 12-0 after a pin from No. 4-ranked Quade Smith and an 8-6 decision win from Hunter Jacobsen. With the ThunderWolves unable to get a win from their only ranked wrestler, Chadron State seized momentum and made scoring points contagious for the rest of the match.
Aidan Callahan earned five points with a 17-2 tech fall win before Brandon Paredes needed just 1:49 to rack up a 15-0 tech win over CSUP's Hunter Richardson. At 165 pounds, Tayten Gillette pushed for a final takedown with 10 seconds left which, combined with the riding time point, put Gillette over the top for a major decision win at 11-3, bringing CSC's dual lead to 26-0.
Pueblo got its only win at 174 pounds, a hard-fought 5-3 decision, before the Eagles resumed the blowouts. Keegan Gehlhausen wrestled at home for the first time all season and showed no signs of rust with a 20-2 tech win before Mason Villwok earned a tech for the second straight RMAC dual, winning 17-1 at 197, and Reese's decision win ended the dual.
Chadron State's January 31 dual against Adams State is its final home dual of the season. The Eagles are halfway through the six-match RMAC season.

Eagles Use Three-Pointer to Beat Griffins
SALT LAKE CITY – Chadron State built a double-digit lead in the first half and made it stick, leading wire-to-wire and earning a hard-fought 73-67 RMAC victory over Westminster on Thursday evening in Utah.
Isaiah Randolph led a group of five CSC players in double figures with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting while Blessing Adesipe added 15 points, Zach Smith 13, Jadon Cool 11 and Mack Keighran 10.
The Eagles also lit up from long range, setting a new season high with 15 made three-pointers and tying a season-best by shooting 42.9 percent (15-35) from the field as a team. CSC previously hit the same percentage by making 9 of 21 attempts against Nebraska-Kearney on December 16.
Chadron State also stuck with a short rotation – only nine players saw the court and only six played more than 10 minutes. Zach Smith played a season-high 35 minutes while Randolph (33), Adesipe (31) and Cool (31) also topped 30 minutes played.
Keighran (26 minutes off the bench) and Luka Djuvoric (22 minutes) also played substantial roles. Djurovic and Adesipe tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece while Keighran tallied a team-high four assists.
The Eagles shot 45.3 percent from the field in addition to their season-best three-point shooting night and were 66.7 percent (10-15) from the line. The host Griffins shot only 38.3 percent from the field and 27.6 percent from three.
Westminster was unable to shoot well enough to take advantage of a 39-31 rebounding edge. The Griffins had 15 offensive rebounds, but only managed nine second chance points off those opportunities, as the Eagles tenaciously guarded the second shots as effectively as the first.
The Eagles soared out to an 8-0 lead after back-to-back threes from Randolph and a steal with a layup at the other end from Keighran. The visitors led by double digits for the first time when a Zach Smith three made it 22-11 and ran their advantage up to as much as 18 with just over two minutes to play in the first half.
Adesipe, who had four three-pointers on the night, hit a pair midway through the second half as the Eagles still led by 16 points with just under 10 minutes left in the game, but the home team made an effort to come back.
The Griffins went on a 6-0 run to trim CSC's lead to 11 points, then later used a 10-3 run to pull within four points at 71-67 with 59 seconds left, the smallest margin since it was 3-0, CSC. Westminster missed its final two field goal attempts, both three-pointers, and CSC grabbed both rebounds and had Randolph add two points from the stripe to ice it with one second remaining.
Chadron State is now 4-13 overall and 2-7 in the RMAC. Westminster drops to 7-10 overall and also 2-7 in the RMAC. The Eagles will face Colorado Mesa (10-7, 6-3 RMAC) this Saturday at 3 p.m.

Quintana Scores 22 In Loss to Westminster
SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a career night from guard Audrey Quintana, the Chadron State College women's basketball team lost their third consecutive game, falling 82-53 to Westminster in Salt Lake City on Thursday evening.
The Eagles fell to 1-13, 1-8 RMAC with the loss. Westminster is 4-11 overall and earns its first RMAC win to also improve to 1-8 in conference.
Quintana scored a season-high 22 points while shooting 6 of 12 from the field, 2 of 5 from three-point range and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line while also leading CSC on the night with three assists and two steals. The Griffins also dominated the rebounding battle (45-28) and had 20 assists compared to CSC's eight. The Eagles also had 24 turnovers, eight more than the home team's 16.
Chadron State had five different players tie for a team-high three rebounds – Wagner, Bindzus, Amya Winfrey, Teryn Stokes and Alexis Trousdale.
The Griffins started fast, opening a 10-2 lead four minutes into the game and closed on a 13-2 run over the final four-and-a-half minutes of the opening period. Westminster led 25-8 after one quarter, were up 18 points at halftime and led by 27 after three periods.
Chadron State's best quarter was the second quarter, as the Eagles made 6 of 10 field goal attempts while the Griffins shot just 36.8 percent in the period. Quintana had 9 of CSC's 19 points in the quarter.
