Sidney's Mitchell Deer sets new UNK school record in indoor 400
WAYNE, Neb. — Former Sidney standouts made their mark across collegiate track and field meets Saturday, highlighted by record-setting performances and podium finishes.
At the WSC NCAA Showdown in Wayne, Nebraska-Kearney senior Mitchell Deer set a new school record in the men’s 400 meters, winning the event in 48.21 seconds. The mark broke the previous UNK record of 48.22 set by Micah Swedberg in Feb. 2024.
Deer, a Sidney High School graduate, was one of three Lopers to finish in the top five of the event.
Another Sidney alum, freshman Talissa Tanquary, continued her strong start to the indoor season for Nebraska-Kearney. Tanquary placed second in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:16.11 and ran on the Lopers’ 4x400-meter relay team, which finished second in 3:57.81.
Sidney representation extended beyond UNK, as Chadron State senior Lydia Peters competed in the women’s 3,000 meters. Peters finished 11th with a time of 10:40.03.
UNK will host the Charlie Foster Classic next Friday at Cushing Coliseum.
