BRIDGEPORT, Neb. — The Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department is inviting community members to learn more about joining the department during an informational meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Bridgeport fire hall.

Fire Chief Casey Sides said the department is actively looking to grow its roster, noting that volunteer fire departments are essential to small rural communities like Bridgeport. Without volunteers, Sides said, the city would face either the cost of a paid fire service or the possibility of having no local fire protection, both of which could lead to higher taxes and insurance costs for residents.

The department currently has 15 members and is hoping to add another 15 to 20 volunteers. Sides said the role can be demanding, as volunteers balance work, family and personal time, but it is also rewarding to serve the community in emergency situations.

During the meeting, prospective members will have the opportunity to meet current firefighters, tour the fire trucks and ask questions about training, safety and expectations.

Sides also highlighted a new city-sponsored incentive program designed to recruit and retain volunteers. Bridgeport recently became the third fire department in the Nebraska Panhandle to offer the program, which is based on a point system. Volunteers who reach 50 points during the year will receive a $599 check at year’s end, followed by a $300 contribution to a retirement account in January.

In addition to the incentive program, Sides noted that firefighters are considered first responders and may be eligible for discounts at some local and regional businesses.
