NEWPORT, Neb. – Residents of Newport are being advised to prepare for a possible evacuation as a wildfire burns northwest of the town. Rock County Sheriff Ben Shelbourn has issued a Level 1 evacuation alert, urging people to consider planning and packing in case an evacuation is needed.

Newport is located in north-central Nebraska and has a population of under 100. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and be ready to act if conditions worsen.
