VALENTINE, Neb. — From drug cases to assault and disturbing the peace, the Cherry County Courthouse in Valentine saw a busy Monday docket.

Here’s a look at some of the cases:

An Ainsworth man has been sentenced to two days in jail for resisting arrest and disturbing the peace after a confrontation at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area.

According to court documents, authorities responded to a disturbance call at the Willow Cove Campground on August 1. When a deputy arrived, he found Christopher Fernandez unsteady on his feet, with glossy eyes and slurred speech. Authorities say he was agitated and began talking in a raised voice. According to the affidavit, the deputy spoke to 12 campers who said Fernandez had disturbed their peace, and they didn’t feel safe with him remaining in the area.

When the deputy attempted to arrest Fernandez for disturbing the peace, Fernandez allegedly became combative.

“When your affiant attempted to place Christopher in handcuffs, he twisted away, took off his shirt, and got into an aggressive posture,” the affidavit reads. “Your affiant drew his Taser and informed Christopher that if he did not comply, he would be tased. Christopher ran toward his campsite, where there were several impliments including a claw hammer visible on the picnic table.”

According to the affidavit, the deputy then deployed a Taser, stopping Fernandez, who continued resisting until a second burst of current was used. He was then taken into custody.

In another case, a Pewaukee, Wisconsin man is facing a charge of possessing a controlled substance after authorities said he was caught with psychedelic mushrooms and a marijuana “one hitter” while tubing on the Niobrara River.

Jared Aurand, 37, is scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 21. According to an arrest affidavit, a park ranger saw Aurand passing around a one hitter and observed him place a small piece of a substance on a woman’s tongue before giving it to another person in July. When authorities searched his backpack, they reportedly found vacuum-sealed packages containing mushrooms and the smoking device.

Also on the docket, a Hoople, North Dakota man made his first appearance for possession of a controlled substance.

Ryan Jordan, 34, was arrested on Aug. 27 after authorities found marijuana, 26 THC vape cartridges, eight THC vape pens, two marijuana grinders, five marijuana pipes, a marijuana bong, THC wax, various paraphernalia, and fake urine in a sealed package.

According to an affidavit, an officer stopped Jordan’s vehicle in the Bomgaars Farm Store parking lot for a broken headlight. The officer reported smelling marijuana and noted that the vehicle had no registration and that Jordan’s driver’s license was suspended.
