Eagles and Falcons Split Tight Doubleheader on Thursday

JOHNSON, NE - The Freeman Falcons & Johnson-Brock Eagles split a pair of close basketball games on Thursday, as heard on B103.

In the ladies' contest, the Falcons rode a strong third quarter to a 61-54 win. The Eagles led at halftime, 24-23, but Freeman outscored the Eagles in the third frame, 21-13, to go ahead by their final margin of victory (seven). Freeman got 21 points from Savannah Mahler, 19 from Brooklynn Veerhusen, and another 14 from Shiloh Wallman. Johnson-Brock was led by the 17 points of Kasie Knippelmeyer. Daley Pelican added 16, and Lauren Behrends scored eleven. The Falcons end the regular season at 16-6, while the Eagles sit at 16-7 with their regular season finale tonight when they bring in H-TR-S.

The boys' battle saw the teams go into overtime before Johnson-Brock prevailed, 56-50. Things started well for Freeman, as the team jumped out to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. JB responded with a 21-5 second quarter to go up 27-23 at the break. The Falcons fought back for a 36-34 lead after the third, and things ended up tied at 47 at the end of regulation. The Eagles were led by Deacon Bernadt's 13 points, while Brody Koehler & Robert Gravatt each hit for a dozen. The Falcons saw Hayden Jansen score 14, but eleven were in the opening stanza. Easton Buss added eleven, and Barret Ideus knocked in ten. Freeman is now 16-4 with a trip to Sterling next Friday, Feb. 20, and Johnson-Brock is 19-3 with a clash with H-TR-S tonight.
