Grass fire south of Sidney quickly contained Thursday evening

Multiple fire departments responded to a fast-moving grass fire south of Sidney Thursday evening near Road 12 and Highway 19. Crews were able to quickly contain the blaze and were in mop-up mode within about an hour.

SIDNEY, Neb. — Multiple fire departments responded to a fast-moving grass fire south of Sidney Thursday evening, but crews were able to bring the blaze under control within about an hour.

The fire was first reported at approximately 6:26 p.m. near Road 10 and Highway 19 in Cheyenne County, roughly five miles north of Lorenzo.

Dispatch information indicated the fire was moving quickly in 66.8 mph wind gusts near grain silos in the area, with homes located nearby.

Firefighters from the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department responded along with mutual aid from departments in Peetz and Potter. The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist.

Firefighters had the blaze “pretty well” contained by about 7:02 p.m. The fire was surrounded by growing wheat fields, and a tractor with a disc was used to help stop its spread.

By approximately 7:15 p.m., crews had shifted into mop-up operations and no additional resources were needed.

No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported.
