'People can feel my passion': alum Marty Levinson hired as UNK men's basketball coach
The University of Nebraska-Kearney is turning to an alumnus to lead its men’s basketball program.

KEARNEY, Neb. — The University of Nebraska-Kearney is turning to an alumnus to lead its men’s basketball program.
The Lopers announced Tuesday that Marty Levinson will be the next UNK head coach. The 42-year-old played three seasons for Tom Kropp and the Lopers from 2003-2005. UNK went 30-3 his senior season, Levinson earned second-team all-conference honors and the team made the Elite Eight.
He joined the Doug and Daddy Show on ESPN Tri-Cities on Tuesday.
“I think that people can feel my passion. I don’t think people quite know how special of a situation UNK is, but I’m sure they’re going to know pretty soon.”
Levinson replaces longtime coach Kevin Lofton, who resigned before his contract was set to expire in November. The Loper won just five games in each of the past two seasons.
Levinson comes to Kearney from Trinity Valley Community College in Texas where his team posted a 27-8 record. Before Trinity Valley, he was head coach at Southern Arkansas University Tech for six seasons. He was head coach at Central Community College in Nebraska from 2011-2014.
