ROSEBUD, S.D. - A 22-year-old Rosebud woman has been sentenced for an assault that resulted in serious injuries on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. Talena Pretty Bird, age 22, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

On the morning of Nov.24, 2022, Pretty Bird, along with her sister, mother, and two juveniles, responded to a call from her brother, who mistakenly claimed a woman had assaulted him and damaged his vehicle. When they arrived in Spring Creek, an argument erupted between Pretty Bird’s group and the victim. The confrontation escalated into violence, with Pretty Bird and others assaulting the victim. Her sister attacked the victim with a bat, while Pretty Bird punched and struck the victim.

As a result of the assault, the victim sustained a broken arm that required surgery and a scalp laceration that needed staples.
