VALENTINE, Neb. - The Cherry County Board of Commissioners appointed an acting interim assessor at its meeting Tuesday. Chelsey Fessler with the Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division will hold the position until Melissa Bancroft of Valentine obtains the required certification.

Commissioners voted to hire Bancroft as the assessor office manager, with the intention of appointing her as the official assessor as long as she passes her certification exam.

The assessor position, which is typically elected, is vacant after previous assessor Jackie Moreland resigned. Her resignation was effective Sept. 10.

As News Channel Nebraska previously reported, commissioners are also looking for a new Cherry County clerk after Brittny Longcor announced her resignation. Longcor has held the position for six years and been in the office for nine.
