MARTIN, S.D. - A new outdoor ice skating rink is set to open in downtown Martin, offering a free winter activity for families and visitors. The Martin City Council recently approved a proposal by local resident Melissa Slattery to build the rink on an empty lot along Main Street, near Security First Bank.

“There’s not a lot for families to do around here in the winter. I grew up ice skating, and I wanted to bring that experience to the next generation,” said Slattery.

The 40-by-80-foot portable rink is expected to be ready shortly after Thanksgiving, just in time for the Parade of Lights on Dec. 7.

In addition to creating a fun, family-friendly attraction, Slattery believes it could also give an economic boost to the community.

“I hope it will also bring people to Martin and downtown,” said Slattery.

While skating will be free, Slattery is seeking donations of ice skates to make the experience accessible for everyone.

“Right now, there’s no local place to buy ice skates. Our next step is to round up skates,” said Slattery.

Anyone with skates to donate is encouraged to contact Melissa Slattery at 605-441-0806.
