MULLEN, Neb. - Firefighters from several departments worked together Thursday evening into early Friday morning to contain a grass fire northwest of Mullen. The fire was located at Spikebox Ranch, property owned by Ted Turner. Turner is an American media mogul, philanthropist, and environmentalist best known for founding CNN.

Mullen Fire Chief Tyler Cash says that no structures were damaged, though the exact number of acres burned is still being assessed.

"The toughest challenge was dealing with the rough, sandy hills," said Cash.

Crews from Valentine, Thedford, McPherson County, and the Sandhills Fire Protection District responded to help Mullen firefighters.

“A whole bunch of ranchers also helped out. We were grateful to have so many people step up,” said Cash.
