Cedar Catholic holds on for tight win over Battle Creek in Mid State Conference Tournament
WEST POINT - Cedar Catholic and Battle Creek duked it out on Monday night in West Point, with the winner earning a date against GACC in Hartington.
Both the Bravettes and Trojans tempo was quick to start the game, but it turned into turnovers and missed opportunities early.
Battle Creek took the first lead on a Sophie Humphrey three, but Cedar Catholic came right back and managed to hold the lead at the end of the first quarter 9-6.
In the second quarter, the offense picked up for both teams, yet turnovers were still an issue.
Cedar Catholic's Katelyn Arens had a huge first half on the inside while Addison Walter was knocking down shots on the outside.
Leading 20-16 at halftime, the Trojans started to get in foul trouble, making it difficult to play aggressively.
The Trojans continued to hold the lead into the third quarter, 33-28.
Cedar Catholic extended the lead to 39-31 in the fourth quarter when Anisten Wortmann and Savannah Pick both fouled out of the game.
The Bravettes started picking up from downtown late in the game, led by a fantastic 14-point performance from Sophie Humphrey.
Leading by three points late in the game, a missed Cedar Catholic free throw would have given Battle Creek a chance to tie the contest, but Lauren Bernecker picked up the offensive rebound and put the game away with a free throw.
Cedar Catholic held on for the 41-36 win, improving their record to 12-7 and earning a matchup against GACC.
Addison Walter led the way for Cedar Catholic with 13 points, followed by Katelyn Arens with 12 points and Anisten Wortmann with 9 points.
Battle Creek saw a great night from Sophie Humphrey, scoring 14 points and led all scorers. Karley Freudenburg and Sami Wemhoff each added 6 points.
