VALENTINE, Neb. - A Valentine artist took home the People’s Choice Award during the Black Hills Stock Show Quick Draw competition. David Dorsey was one of 12 artists participating in the event, which challenged artists to complete a piece within an hour.

“It’s always stressful for me to compete in a quick draw, but once I get going I start to calm down and tune everything else out,” said Dorsey.

Dorsey’s piece, which featured a Hereford bull, was auctioned off at the end of the show.

“I always try to pick a subject that I like to work with and always practice it at home before the event to make sure my timing is right,” said Dorsey.

The Quick Draw competition took place on Feb. 7 at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, held in the same room as the Western Art Show.

“It just was an amazing honor to have your work chosen as People’s Choice with so many great pieces and artists to choose from,” said Dorsey.

As News Channel Nebraska recently reported, Dorsey also won Best of Show in the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs show.
