HAY SPRINGS, Neb. - The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death of a Hay Springs juvenile, according to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office. As News Channel Nebraska previously reported, Hay Springs Public School shared with parents that they are “saddened to report that an 8th grade student died in an accident.”

The school message said the accident occurred on Sunday, March 2, in Harding County, South Dakota. While Harding County law enforcement did respond, the accident actually occurred within Perkins County’s jurisdiction.

The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office is forwarding all media inquiries to the Attorney General’s Office, which will only confirm that the death is under investigation.

In response to the tragedy, the school district provided counselors and staff to support students on Sunday evening.
