VALENTINE, Neb. - Safety improvements are coming to an intersection in Valentine that has been the site of multiple crashes, including a recent incident where a driver ran into a nearby cemetery fence.

The Green Street-East C Street intersection has long been a trouble spot. In response to past crashes, the city installed a flashing stop sign, but crashes have continued.

“Crashes used to happen more often, but we’ve taken several measures,” said Valentine City Manager Shane Siewert.

Speaking to the city council Thursday night, Siewert said additional safety upgrades are planned, including rumble bars and a guardrail with a berm behind it. Construction is expected to begin once the weather warms up.

Also during Thursday’s meeting, Siewert updated the council on police department hiring efforts, noting that a couple of applicants are in the process of completing required classes. However, the biggest discussion of the night centered around a sidewalk construction project and its potential impact on nearby landowners and children walking to school.
