Valentine woman sentenced in meth conspiracy and gun case

VALENTINE, Neb. - A 44-year-old Valentine woman has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for her role in a methamphetamine conspiracy. Venetia Torres also received a 15-year sentence for a firearms charge, though both sentences will run concurrently (at the same time).

The case unfolded on May 9, 2023, when the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) intercepted a suspicious package sent from Beaumont, California, to Broomfield, Colorado. The parcel contained 1,075 grams of counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl. Investigators discovered that the same sender had mailed another package to Valentine, Nebraska, using a fake return address and recipient.

On June 7, 2023, Torres attempted to retrieve the Valentine-bound package from a postal contractor. Two weeks earlier, she had also tried to claim a package assigned to an unoccupied trailer mailbox. The next day, USPIS agents located the parcel at the North Platte Processing and Distribution Facility. A federal search warrant confirmed that it contained approximately 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine.

The investigation led to the arrest of Torres on June 9, 2023, when her son and co-defendant, Aaron Torres, along with his minor brother, attempted to pick up the package at the post office. Both were detained and questioned by authorities.

Venetia Torres admitted to knowing about the meth shipment and two prior drug packages sent on May 3 and May 22, 2023. During the investigation, officers found a Hi-Point .45 caliber handgun in her vehicle, which she acknowledged belonged to her. As a convicted felon, she was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Laboratory testing confirmed the seized methamphetamine weighed 1,700 grams with a purity of 98%.

Her co-defendant, Aaron Torres, pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy charges in Dec. 2024.
