Eagles notes: Chadron State loses sequel to West Texas
CANYON, Texas – Four Eagles scored in double figures and CSC shot 42 percent from the field, but West Texas A&M hit 21 threes and enjoyed a big advantage on the glass as the Buffaloes defeated the Eagles 118-83 on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second win over Chadron State in as many nights for West Texas A&M, a team receiving votes in the NABC Coaches Poll who improved to 4-0 on the season. Chadron State, which opened its season this weekend, is now 0-2 after the two decisions against the Buffaloes.
Junior guard Jadon Cool led CSC with 17 points on 6 of 16 shooting, making three three-pointers to tie for the team lead with Ethan Russell. Isaiah Randolph, the Eagles' leading scorer in game one, poured in an efficient 16 points, only missing one shot the entire game as Randolph went 4 of 5 from the floor and 8 of 8 from the line.
Zach Smith, CSC's only returning letterwinner from 2024-25, added 14 points, the majority of which came at the stripe with the guard making 10 of 14 foul shots. Lincoln, Nebraska freshman Konnor Kralik added 11 points to get in double figures for the first time in his young collegiate career.
Led by Smith and Randolph, the Eagles did excel at getting to the line, but didn't convert many of the extra opportunities. CSC shot 75 percent (24-32) from the stripe, while West Texas A&M only attempted 22 foul shots but made 19 of them (86.4 percent).
The Buffaloes put some distance between themselves and Chadron State from beyond the arc. While the Eagles made 9 of 25 attempts, WTA&M let 42 three-point attempts fly and sunk half of them. West Texas also outrebounded Chadron State 49-34, including a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.
The 118 pounds are the most allowed by Chadron State in the Chris Francis era. Only one time in Francis's first season (2024-25) did the Eagles allow more than the 98 points scored by the Buffaloes on Friday night.
The hosts had six double-figure scorers, led by perennial leading scorer Fontaine Williams with 21 points. Camden Cowgill followed with 20. Williams and Zach Brown each hit four three-pointers.
After Cool's 16 field goal attempts, Kralik had the second-most shots on the day for the Eagles, shooting 5 of 8 from the field and burying his only three-pointer. Jovan Jovanovic, CSC's second-leading scorer on Friday, was just 1 of 7 from the field, including 0 of 5 from deep.

Eagles Run the Table Over Otero, FHSU
WRAY, Colo. – Chadron State pitched a pair of shutouts in its season-opening duals on Saturday, cruising to a 54-0 win over Otero Junior College and a 40-0 win over Fort Hays State at a triangular held at Wray High School.
Across the two duals, Chadron State won all 20 matches with six falls, five tech falls, three major decisions and three decisions. The Eagles improved their 2025-26 dual record to 2-0 and earned their first nonconference dual wins since 2023-24 after choosing not to schedule any last season.
Chadron State used the same wrestlers in eight of 10 weight classes for both duals. Quade Smith (125 pounds), Hunter Jacobsen (133), Brandon Paredes (157), Tayten Gillette (165), Logan Berger (174), Brooks Loosvelt (184), Mason Villwok (197) and Eli Reese (285) all went 2-0 on the day.
The Eagles split their squad at 141 and 149. At 141 pounds, Cyrus Wells earned an 18-10 major decision against Otero while Gannon transfer Caleb Chaves won an 11-2 major decision against Fort Hays State. At 149, Western Wyoming College transfer Wyatt McDermott earned a pin in the Otero dual before Caleb Nadig wrestled against FHSU and won via major decision.
Chadron State was all over Otero from the start, with reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week Quade Smith pinning his opponent in just 1:51 and Jacobsen adding another six points with an even quicker fall in 1:37. After Wells's major decision win, the Eagles recorded pins in three of their next four bouts and won the only match that wasn't a pin by a score of 16-0. Two more 15-0 techs followed by Villwok and Reese at the upper weights.
While the Fort Hays State dual didn't have quite as many bonus points, the Eagles were still decisive and swept all 10 matches. Smith, Berger and Gillette all earned major decision wins while Jacobsen had a tech fall, giving the quartet two bonus point wins each on the day.
Villwok had CSC's closest call of the day battling with FHSU's Ryan Patterson at 197. Trailing 1-0 after two periods, Villwok selected bottom, escaped, and then earned a tiebreaking takedown to win 4-1. Eli Reese, who came to Chadron State from Gannon alongside Chaves, punctuated the day with a pin at heavyweight, the only pin against Fort Hays for CSC.
Next up for the Eagles is the UNK Open on Saturday, November 22, one of the largest college wrestling tournaments in the country.
Munson Wins to Lead Six Placers in Kansas
COLBY, Kan. – Desza Munson won the 145-pound bracket at the Colby Dust Bowls Open as six of 12 Chadron State women's wrestlers earned placings at the event hosted by Colby Community College on Saturday.
Munson, a redshirt freshman from Commerce City, Colorado who also earned a dual victory for the Eagles on Thursday, went 3-0 to take down the title and become the first CSC tournament champion this season.
Munson grew more dominant as the day went on. After a hard-fought 10-6 decision win over Murray State's Adrianna Chronister in the quarterfinal, Munson pinned William Jewell's McKinzie Ross in 3:21 in the semis and only needed 1:07 to pin Fort Hays State's Amanda Jaegar in the championship bout.
Other CSC placers and their records on the day include Adrianna Lopez (2nd at 117, 2-1), Ana Rojas Zamora (2nd at 124, 2-1), Maria Arellano (3rd at 160, 5-1) and Eliza Davis (6th at 138, 3-3).
Among non-placers, Isabella Crown (103 pounds), Nevaeh Leonard (138), Hattie Baldwin (145) and Estrella Vasquez Gutierrez (207) all went 1-2 during Saturday's competition.
Adrianna Lopez continued her strong start as alongside Munson, CSC's redshirt freshman class has come to play early in 2025-26. After defeating three higher-seeded wrestlers at the Battle of the Rockies and earning a pin in her CSC dual debut Thursday, Lopez placed at a collegiate open for the first time, starting in style with a 23-second pin of Schreiner University's Janel Golderos.
Another fall followed in the semifinals when Lopez beat Sarah Spataro of Hastings at the 3:51 mark. Lopez fell in the championship to William Jewell's Alexandra Waitsman via a 12-1 tech fall.
Maria Arellano, a redshirt junior from Fresno, California, won the most matches on the day for Chadron State. After a first-round 44-second pin, Arellano fell in the quarterfinals to eventual second-place finisher Atavia Cain from Colby CC. Undeterred, Arellano dominated the rest of the way to rise up to third, earning another pin plus two tech falls and a forfeit victory.
True freshman Eliza Davis also had a busy day in the 138-pound bracket. Davis, of Kaysville, Utah, won her first three matches with one pin, one tech fall and one decision to advance to the semifinal, where she dropped a narrow 8-7 decision to Lisa Hoeflich of Hastings. Davis was pinned in both the consolation semi and fifth-place match to finish in sixth among a 19-wrestler bracket.
Chadron State will head to Minot, North Dakota next weekend to compete in the Minot State duals on Friday followed by the Minot State Open Saturday.
