LINGLE, Wyo. — Fire crews from multiple agencies contained a grass fire north of Lingle on Tuesday afternoon as strong winds swept across eastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle.

The fire was reported near the landfill north of Lingle during a period of high winds that created challenging fire weather conditions across the region. Officials said the combination of limited available fuel and a nearby canal acting as a natural fire break helped crews quickly gain control and prevent the blaze from spreading.

“With the high winds we experienced today, conditions had the potential to make things challenging,” the Lingle Volunteer Fire Department and EMS said in a statement. “Fortunately, there was very little fuel in the area to carry the fire far, and the canal acted as a natural fire break.”

No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained before it could grow significantly.

The Torrington Volunteer Fire Department responded on a mutual aid request from Lingle, sending Tanker 1 with two firefighters to assist. Officials said the response underscores the importance of cooperation among rural departments, particularly during periods of elevated fire danger.

“These types of calls are a grim reminder of what lies ahead if we continue to see high winds and no precipitation,” the Torrington department said in a statement. “Our strength in these rural departments lies in the ability to call for mutual aid and know we have help coming.”

In addition to Torrington Fire, the Veteran Fire Department, a local farmer and linemen from Wyrulec Company assisted at the scene.

Fire officials expressed appreciation for the coordinated effort and community support that helped keep the incident manageable.
