MULLEN, Neb. -- The Hooker County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about a scam after at least one person in the area has fallen victim.

The Sheriff’s Office said to beware of computer screen pop-ups telling you that you’ve been scammed. They may use the Microsoft logo and have a number to call.

Officials said that it’s very important to not call the number. The scammer will request direct access to your computer to supposedly fix the problem. However, instead of fixing anything, the scammer will steal personal information.

The sheriff said that it’s important to be proactive in preventing cyber crimes because scammers are always using new tactics.

“While it’s inconvenient, it’s recommended that you periodically change your passwords,” the office said.

To report a crime in Hooker County, call (308)546-2290.
