ROSEBUD, S.D. -- A 20-year-old Rosebud, South Dakota man has been sentenced for involuntary manslaughter in connection with a deadly crash in May 2022. Jiles Whipple will spend two and a half years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

On May 28, 2022, Whipple was drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana at his house before driving a vehicle that he knew had faulty brakes. While driving, he ran a stop sign at a three-way intersection, hitting a pickup, and killing a five-year old child who was riding in the bed of the truck.

In addition to his prison sentence, Whipple must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and $17,173 in restitution, with the possibility of additional restitution.

Whipple was indicted by a federal grand jury in February of 2023. He pleaded guilty on Mar. 18, 2024.
