Firefighters battling two fires east of Valentine
Firefighters are battling two fires east of Valentine believed to have been caused by lightning.
UPDATE on Sept, 5 at 7:00 p.m.: The fire in Cherry County has been extinguished, and the fire in Keya Paha County named the Shepard's Hill fire is now contained, according to Cherry County Emergency Management Director Jessica Coyle. However, firefighters will likely be on the scene of the Shepard's Hill throughout the night.
Coyle said the air tanker did help through four different fire retardant drops.
VALENTINE, Neb. - Firefighters are battling two fires east of Valentine believed to have been caused by lightning. One fire is located near mile marker 11 along Highway 12. The other is in Keya Paha County near the Cherry County border south of Highway 12.
Wood Lake firefighters are on the scene of both fires. Valentine firefighters are also battling the fire in Cherry County, and Springview crews are fighting the flames in Keya Paha County.
A single engine air tanker, or SEAT, stationed in Scottsbluff, Nebraska is also helping out. The plane can deliver up to 800 gallons of fire retardant to support firefighters on the ground.
