Evacuations west of Valentine due to wildfire

3:20 Update: Several fire departments have been released, and firefighters are now in mop-up stage, according to Cherry County Emergency Manager Jessica Coyle. Coyle also confirms that the evacuations have been lifted.
VALENTINE, Neb. - The Cherry County Sheriff and a deputy are conducting evacuations west of Valentine as a nearby wildfire threatens the area. Authorities are going door-to-door, urging residents to leave their homes. The office says the fire is between Valentine and Crookston north of Highway 20.
"If you live near the highway in this area, be ready to evacuate. Deputies have gone door to door to all known residences that currently appear to be in the line of the fire, but be aware of changing winds. We will close Highway 20 if necessary," said the Sheriff's Office.
Along with Valentine’s volunteer firefighters, crews from Cody, Kilgore, Wood Lake, and Mission are assisting, along with a single engine air tanker (SEAT PLANE). The Nebraska State Patrol has also been called in to manage traffic.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking travelers to avoid the area, and remain alert for emergency lights and sirens.
