VALENTINE, Neb. - Through tears, Cherry County Clerk Brittny Longcor called for a roll call vote of county commissioners to accept her resignation. Longcor has held the position for six years and been in the office for nine.

“I want to throw up now,” said Longcor, visibly emotional.

Her resignation will be effective Nov. 22. Commissioner Martin DeNaeyer said all three commissioners had private conversations with Longcor, hoping to convince her to stay.

“I’ll definitely miss you something terrible. There’s a lot of stuff you do for this office,” said DeNaeyer. “We know an opportunity presented itself that you wanted to take. Thank you so much for what you’ve done.”

Longcor said she wanted to stay in office through the election and audit.

“I know that’s important for everyone’s sake—the board, my staff and the county,” said Longcor.

“I 100% think the knowledge she has will not be replaceable, but we can’t stay in her way of a new opportunity,” said DeNaeyer.

A couple of area residents have recently voiced concerns about commissioners increasing salaries for several Cherry County positions, resulting in higher salaries than most elected officials. One meeting attendee questioned whether Longcor quit because of her pay.

Longcor did not mention whether pay factored into her decision. Regardless of the reason, Longcor said she didn’t take her decision lightly.

“It’s really hard,” said Longcor.

After a vote to start looking for Longcor’s replacement, commissioners and attendees gave Longcor a round of applause.
