VALENTINE, Neb. - The Nebraska Sandhills are earning international attention for being the only U.S. destination to make the list of Atlas Obscura’s "Five Best Places Our Readers Want to Go in 2025." In the article, the American-based travel and exploration company highlighted the towns of Taylor and Bartlett, Carhenge, Merritt Reservoir and its distinctive topography. Writers praised the area for its mix of natural beauty, quirky art, and quiet charm.

“This honor is a thrilling recognition of the Sandhills’ hidden treasures and natural allure,” said Visit Nebraska Executive Director John Ricks in a press release.

The Sandhills join an international lineup that includes Zimbabwe, Xiahe in China, the Faroe Islands, and Serra da Capivara in Brazil. According to Atlas Obscura, the Sandhills stood out because of the peaceful vibe and lack of heavy tourism, making it feel like a true undiscovered gem.
