Kyle man sentenced to less than three years in prison for causing a death on the Pine Ridge Reservation

A 29-year-old man from Kyle has been sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison following a deadly shooting on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

KYLE, S.D. - A 29-year-old man from Kyle has been sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison following a deadly shooting on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Jeremy Red Owl was riding in the backseat of a moving vehicle while under the influence of cocaine and carrying a loaded gun. According to court documents, Red Owl told investigators he leaned forward—causing the gun to accidentally fire. The bullet struck and killed the driver.

Red Owl was indicted by a federal grand jury in Nov. 2024 on charges of involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He pleaded guilty in Jan. 2025.
